After the success of YPC18218, the young people around Southern Africa had another opportunity
to assemble- this time at the annual Dragon Boat Regatta!
This year’s Regatta took place on Monday 2 April 2018 (Family Day) at Canal Walk in Century City- the venue where it all began many years ago!
The event consisted of 60 teams ranging from the outskirts of Langebaan on the West Coast (Langebaan Whalers) to Gauteng (Spirit Chasers).
Team captains and managers registered from 8am and soon teams were ready to start loading for the event which started at 9am. Thousands of supporters, including District Apostle J Kriel, arrived at the venue to experience this amazing event, with many supporters wearing their team’s colours to show their support.
Teams battled it out in two time-trial heats before the final tail races and grand finale. It was no surprise that the Northpine Vikings (Northpine congregation) were in the final to defend their title as the 2017 champions. It was going to be a tough race because the other finalists, namely HiBeez (Highbury congregation) and Wesbank Central Dragons B (Wesbank Central congregation), were ready to claim the title for 2018.
Despite the wind picking up, the anxious and exciting final was a close and nail-biting race, and in a matter of split seconds, the Northpine Vikings were once again victorious and retained the title as the 2018 winners of the event. Although the competitive spirits were high, fellowship was the winner of the day!
Something unique for 2018 was the live streaming of the first and last hour of the event on the NACTV Facebook page. Do not miss the highlights of the event which will be screened on NACTV in the near future!
